Sand Tunnel

This is the completely caved-in eastern entrance to tunnel 5, commonly known as the Sand Tunnel. It was the last tunnel on the line, and built in such crumbly rock that it was notorious for its instability. So much so that this end had to be shored up in later years. This area is also where the railroad hauled out car loads of sand. That's John Waite, John Barden, Pete Jobusch, John Barden's wife, and Dean Smith getting a closer look.
